Swan Dive: Truman Capote, Frenemies, Scandal, and the Ladies Who Lunched

The Capote biopic ‘Freud: Truman vs the Swans’ has hit the streaming platform HULU by storm and, yes, I am one of its many captivated viewers.

The series documents the fallout between Capote and high society dames Barbara “Babe” Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest and Lee Radziwill. The complicated lives of these women, along with Capote’s inevitable betrayal of them, is shown in a gripping melancholic eight episode arch. Ultimately, Capote and his “swans” unravel after the author pens a sensationalized tell all called, Answered Prayers.

I highly suggest watching this latest installment of the Feud series. Not only does it give audiences a glimpse into Truman Capote as a writer, but it also spotlights the ethical dilemma one is often faced with as a writer. It asks, “Do we, as creators, pull upon the secrets, personal triumphs, and painful memories of those closest to us to further our own creative narratives? Or, is the highroad often better? Are there some stories that are simply not ours to tell, especially if we’re using the people closest to us as if they were our own personal punchlines?”

Master of Dreams

Sandman! Sandman! Sandman!

“The only thing that kept me going was stories. Stories are hope. They take you out of yourself for a bit, and when you get dropped back in, you’re different- you’re stronger, you’ve seen more, you’ve felt more. Stories are like spiritual currency.”
― Neil Gaiman, The Sandman: Book of Dreams

Beatrix Potter Collection on Display

Ever wanted to experience original pieces of Beatrix Potter’s artwork and writing up close? Now you can! Digitally, no less! For those of us unable to travel to the London area, there is an online exhibit for the late author’s work.

The Victoria & Albert Museum South Kensington has curated an intriguing collection of English author and naturalist Helen Beatrix Potter’s writings, drawings, watercolors and other personal effects. One such example of the collection is as follows:

Jemima Puddle-Duck at your service

Place cards, drawn by Beatrix Potter (1866-1943)

Melford Hall, Long Melford, Suffolk, was the home of Beatrix Potter’s (1866-1943) cousin Ethel Hyde-Parker. Beatrix visited many times with her entourage of pet animals as a break from London. She liked to try her tales out on the young children there to see their reactions. This dinner card is part of a set of 15 produced by Beatrix for Melford Hall and was used by Ethel Hyde-Parker’s daughter, Stephanie. Names of guests could be inserted into the diagonal slots. [V&A]
