Character Care Packages: An Unconventional Gift Idea for Readers

Creating character care packages for friends is a fun and creative way to curate a thoughtful present.

How to Build Your Care Package:

  1. Select a book character the recipient enjoys.
    • Choose a beloved character from a popular series that has resonated with your friend. Best options are book franchises they have re-read as well as the characters your friend most mentions.
    • Consider the themes, setting, and mood of the book to inspire the contents of the care package.
    • If you’re still unsure of what fandom to pool from then ask your friend for fanfiction recommendations. By whatever they answer, you’ll soon discover which characters from whichever fan-base they like best.
  2. Gift only relevant items.
    • Gather items that are associated with the chosen character. Consider even doing fandom centered merchandise focused solely on said character. Plenty of options can be found on Etsy.
      • Examples include merchandise, quotes, or objects that reflect the setting or mood of the story and, also, direct references to your friends’ “fan favorite.”
      • If it’s a fantasy novel, include items that evoke a sense of magic. Likewise, if a book about spies consider gifting decoder rings or invisible ink.
  3. Write a letter from the chosen character to your friend.
    • Write a personalized letter or note addressed to your audience, explaining the significance of the care package.
    • Share insights, favorite quotes, or why the care package items represent the essence of the story.
    • Have the character address your friend directly; use cute nicknames and inside jokes. Really put yourself in the shoes of the personality you’re writing as.
  4. Include bookish treats to devour.
  5. Sneak in a special edition book copy.
    • If possible, include a copy of the book that inspired the care package. Make this copy unique by being a special edition release.
    • Include a message on the inside cover to your friend; write in the voice of the character they love.
    • Go one step further and get a limited edition or out-of-print copy. This may be the pricier option, but would definitely make a long lasting impression.
  6. Create a playlist.
    • Craft a playlist of songs that evoke the mood of the book or character. Include a QR code or a link so your friend can enjoy the curated playlist while reading.
      • Spotify and SoundCloud are great apps to use for digital mixed tapes.
      • Choose genre specific music or popular songs that match the book/character’s personality.
  7. Pay attention to the packaging.
    • Use a box or bag that complements the theme of your care package.
      • Is the series set in space? Wrap with celestial patterned paper. A mermaid tale? Spray the inside of the box with an oceanic scent. Wrap the package in the colors of the sea or in mermaid scale tissue paper.
    • Decorative elements are always a welcomed surprise for recipients. Ribbons, baubles, or tissue paper adds an extra touch of charm.
      • Hang ornaments or bookmarks from the ribbon itself.
      • Let the name tag be themed as well.

Remember, the key is to tailor the care package to your friend’s tastes and interests, creating a unique and cherished gift that celebrates their love for literature. This is a gift for them not for you. And, more importantly, have fun creating a memorable experience for your book-loving buddy.

Bookish Dog Accessories

In honor of my dog Trooper (and for all fellow dog lovers) here’s some great dog toys, treats, and accessories with literary flare.

Here’s Trooper. The doggo of the hour. As I write this, he is barking his head off. I think he’s saying, “Hello” to all of you.
