Wonderland Garden:

  • Create a whimsical pathway lined with colorful flowers, reminiscent of Alice’s journey through the fantastical world of Wonderland.
    • Pansies in hues of the mad hatters tea party (purples, pinks, yellows, and orange) would be the most eye-catching.
    • You could also have the Red Queen’s white and red roses lining your garden path too.
  • Incorporate quirky decorations such as over-sized teacups and playing cards to capture the essence of the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
    • Create a sitting area for guests to take tea when visiting. Decorate like the Mad Hatter would if he were hosting a “very merry un-birthday” party.
  • Add a secret garden area where visitors can feel like they’ve stumbled upon the hidden wonders of Wonderland.
    • Place statues of book characters in nooks and crannies of your garden.
      • For example, you could hide the White Rabbit in shrubbery or Twiddle-Dee and Twiddle-Dumb beneath a tree.

Secret Garden Sanctuary:

  • Design a secluded corner of your garden filled with lush greenery and vibrant blooms, evoking the sense of discovery found in Mary Lennox’s hidden garden.
    • Attach a beautiful wooden swing to embrace the haunting and tragic beauty of the book. Place the swing as close to this oasis as possible.
  • Include a rustic bench or stone fountain as a peaceful retreat where you can escape into the pages of a book.
    • Consider going the extra mile and installing a koi fish pond. Doing so would be a subtle nod to the lake the children swim in when seeking refuge inside their secret garden.
  • Plant climbing roses or ivy to create the illusion of an overgrown, magical space waiting to be rediscovered.
    • Choose vibrant colored roses to catch the wandering eye. Hang old keys from tree branches and place Victorian style statues (fairies or angels) in empty spaces.

Hobbiton Haven:

  • Craft a cozy hobbit hole-inspired garden complete with round doorways and earthy tones, reminiscent of Bilbo Baggins’ charming home in the Shire.
    • Stick with warm tones and colors; think shabby chic when designing this outside space.
    • Go thrift store shopping at antique dealers or secondhand shops for wooden deck chairs, wicker accent tables, and cushy pillows, etc.
  • Incorporate lush, rolling hills and meandering pathways to mimic the picturesque landscapes of Middle-earth.
    • Plant a mix of trees, shrubs, and ground cover to create depth and texture in your landscape. Consider species such as oaks, maples, ferns, and mosses.
    • Incorporate vibrant flowers in colors like deep reds, purples, and yellows to add pops of color inspired by Tolkien’s descriptions of flora in Middle-earth.
  • Plant a variety of herbs and vegetables in a small garden patch, paying homage to the hobbits’ love of good food and hearty meals.
    • Consider building raised-bed gardens to enrich your soil while creating visually stunning garden patches. Raised beds are small boxes that are elevated to support plants without using the soil underneath. They instead use soil and compost.
    • Likewise decorate pathways with lanterns, install rustic birdhouses, and scatter fairy garden accessories throughout the space.
    • Incorporate unique features such as a miniature herb garden in old barrels, a hidden treasure chest filled with trinkets, or a gnome village nestled among the plants.

Enchanted Forest Escape:

  • Create a magical woodland area filled with towering trees, fairy lights, and whimsical decorations straight out of a fairy tale.
    • Select plants that evoke the lush, mysterious atmosphere of an enchanted forest. Look for species with interesting textures, shapes, and colors, such as ferns, mosses, ivy, and flowering perennials.
    • Incorporate a mix of trees, shrubs, and ground cover to create layers of vegetation that mimic the diversity of a natural forest.
  • Scatter hidden treasures throughout the forest, inviting visitors to embark on their own storybook adventure in search of secret surprises.
    • Fairy houses and miniature villages nestled among the plants.
    • Decorative lanterns or string lights to illuminate pathways and create a magical ambiance.
    • Wooden benches, rustic furniture, or tree swings for seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of your enchanted forest.
    • Garden sculptures or statues of mythical creatures like fairies, gnomes, and unicorns.
    • A bubbling fountain or tranquil pond to add a sense of serenity and mystery to your forest retreat.
  • Incorporate elements from classic fairy tales such as Hansel and Gretel’s gingerbread house or Red Riding Hood’s winding path through the woods.
    • Define pathways that wind through your enchanted forest backyard using materials like gravel, stepping stones, or wood chips. Curved pathways will add to the magical, meandering feel of the space.
    • Create clearings or open spaces within the forest where you can place seating areas, garden sculptures, or other decorative elements.

  • Sketch out a rough design for your Winnie the Pooh garden, taking inspiration from the idyllic settings described in A.A. Milne’s beloved stories.
    • Consider incorporating elements such as winding pathways, cozy nooks, and colorful flowerbeds.
  • Choose plants that evoke the whimsical, natural feel of the Hundred Acre Wood. Opt for a mix of flowering plants, herbs, and shrubs that thrive in your climate.
    • Include a variety of flowers in vibrant colors such as yellow, orange, and red to reflect the cheerful spirit of Winnie the Pooh and his friends.
    • Plant fragrant herbs like lavender and chamomile to create a sensory experience reminiscent of the scents found in the Hundred Acre Wood.
  • Designate a special area of your garden as Pooh’s Corner, where you can pay tribute to Winnie the Pooh and his friends. This could be a cozy reading nook, a play area for children, or a spot for outdoor picnics.
    • Consider adding features such as:
      • A rustic wooden sign welcoming visitors to the Hundred Acre Wood.
      • Garden statues or figurines of Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, and other beloved characters.
      • Decorative beehives or birdhouses to pay homage to Pooh’s love of honey and his adventures with bees.
      • Cozy seating areas adorned with cushions and blankets where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility of your garden.
      • Colorful banners or bunting featuring quotes and illustrations from the Winnie the Pooh books.

Literary Laughs: April Fools’ Day Pranks for Book Lovers

  • Book Swap Surprise:
    • Organize a book swap event where everyone brings a book to exchange. Slip a funny bookmark or a small note inside some of the books before swapping. The notes could contain amusing quotes, fake author bios, or silly annotations.
  • Literary Scavenger Hunt:
    • Create a scavenger hunt around a library or bookstore. Hide clues inside popular books, leading participants from one book to another until they reach the final destination where a humorous prize awaits them.
  • Fake Book Covers:
    • Design fake book covers for popular titles using humorous or absurd themes. Slip these covers onto books in your friend’s collection, or leave them lying around in public places for unsuspecting readers to find.
  • Bookish Wordplay:
    • Replace the dust jackets of your friend’s favorite books with custom-made versions featuring punny or nonsensical titles. For example, “Pride and Prejudice” could become “Pride and Pudding” or “War and Peace” could become “Whiskers and Fleece.”
  • Mysterious Annotations:
    • Borrow a friend’s book and add silly annotations or comments in the margins using sticky notes or a pencil. Make them absurd or humorous to surprise and delight your friend when they rediscover their annotated book.
  • Bookstore Browsing Bingo:
    • Create bingo cards featuring common bookstore or library clichés, like someone reading in the café, a book falling off the shelf, or someone getting lost in the aisles. Challenge your friend to see how many squares they can check off during their next visit.
  • Literary Fortune Cookies:
    • Craft homemade fortune cookies with book-related fortunes inside. Use quotes from famous authors, literary predictions, or silly book-related jokes for a fun surprise with each cookie.
  • Book Character Pranks:
    • Dress up as famous literary characters and surprise your friend at unexpected times or places. Imagine their reaction when they bump into Sherlock Holmes or Hermione Granger unexpectedly!
  • DIY Bookish Escape Room:
    • Create a mini escape room with book-themed puzzles and challenges. Use clues from classic literature to unlock boxes or solve riddles, leading to the ultimate prize—a new book or a literary-themed gift.
  • Bookish Playlist Switcheroo:
    • Create a playlist of songs inspired by book titles or themes, but intentionally mislabel them. Watch your friend’s confusion as they try to figure out why “The Sound of Silence” is labeled as “Harry Potter’s Greatest Hits.”
  • The Shelf Shuffle:
    • Give your friend’s bookshelf a playful makeover by rearranging their books in alphabetical order by author’s last name, color-coding them, or even stacking them upside down! Just be sure to document their reaction when they discover their meticulously organized collection turned topsy-turvy.
  • The Phantom Bookmark:
    • Leave a mysterious bookmark in a friend’s current read, but make it one that never seems to move no matter how much they read. Whether it’s a feather, a flower petal, or a tiny toy, this phantom bookmark will keep them guessing every time they open their book.
  • Spoof Book Covers:
    • Craft fake book covers with outrageous titles and designs, then slip them onto unsuspecting books in your friend’s collection. From “The Adventures of Sherlock Homeless” to “War and Peas,” these spoof covers will leave them doing a double-take every time they glance at their shelf.

Time After Time: Creating Bookish Time Capsules

Photo by Element5 Digital on Pexels.co
Photo by Thought Catalog on Pexels.com
  • Select a few books that represent the theme you’ve chosen for your capsule. Again, the theme truly can be anything (as seen in Step 1). As for the books, your current favorites, novels that have impacted you, or paperbacks from a specific genre are all great choices.
  • Remember to fill the capsule with as many book related items as you can. Add only objects related to the books you have chosen; additionally, any mementos should reflect life in 2024.
    • Bookmarks, bookplates, or even beloved literary quotes are perfect fillers for your capsule.
  • You should likewise incorporate personal memorabilia into this project.
    • A handwritten letter to your future self is a great example of this. For instance, you could explain why you wanted to leave behind your capsule, (along with the items inside of it) and what you hope people will learn from it.
    • Literary events tickets, author autographs, and book club notes are other great time capsule additions.
Photo by David Bartus on Pexels.com
  • Select a durable airtight container to protect your items from environmental factors. This could be a plastic box with a secure lid or a metal container.
    • I suggest using….
      • Stainless Steel Containers
      • PVC (Plastic Containers with Sealable Lids)
      • Metal Air Tight Containers
      • Glass or Acrylic Containers
      • Concrete or Masonry Containers
      • Copper Containers
      • Plastic PVC Pipe
      • Vacuum-Sealed Bags
      • Ceramic or Clay Containers
      • Aluminum Alloy Containers
      • Fiberglass Containers
  • Decorate the exterior of the container to reflect the literary theme. You can use bookish stickers, quotes, or even create a collage.

  • Decide whether you want to bury the time capsule in a specific location or store it in a safe and accessible place.
    • If you bury a time capsule….
      • Dig a hole in your chosen location. Ensure it’s deep enough to protect the time capsule but shallow enough for easy retrieval in the future.
      • Gently place the sealed time capsule into the hole. Be cautious not to damage the container or its contents.
      • Carefully cover the hole with soil. Pat the soil down gently to secure the time capsule in place.
      • Use a GPS device or smartphone to record the coordinates of the buried time capsule. This can be helpful for precise retrieval in the future.
      • Create a map or document that describes the location of the buried time capsule in relation to fixed points on your property.
    • If you store the time capsule….
      • Choose a storage location that is cool, dark, and dry. Avoid areas with extreme temperature fluctuations. Basements or climate-controlled storage areas are often good choices.
      • If possible, elevate the container off the ground. This can help prevent moisture from seeping into the container in case of flooding or water leaks.
      • Clearly label the outside of the container with information such as the date it was stored, the intended retrieval date, and any specific instructions for future handling.
      • Keep a record of the location where the time capsule is stored. This could include a map or detailed description to aid future retrieval.
      • Be mindful of the environment in which the time capsule is stored. Avoid locations where it may be exposed to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or high humidity.
      • Periodically check the storage conditions of the time capsule. If stored in a location with potential risks, such as a basement prone to flooding, regular monitoring is crucial.
Photo by Ron Lach on Pexels.com
  • Determine a future date when you plan to open the time capsule. It could be a significant milestone, such as a birthday, graduation, or a specific number of years into the future.
  • Mark the retrieval date on your calendar or set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget.
    • For a buried time capsule….
      • If the time capsule had sentimental value to your family or friends, inform them of its location and purpose.
      • Follow any saved GPS coordinates of the burial site as well as your saved documented map to retrieve the time capsule.
    • For a stored time capsule….
      • Much like a buried time capsule, if you wish for any family to be informed of the capsule’s existence then do so now. Be sure to clearly communicate any and all instructions for retrieval. Leave behind or share all info on where you stored the capsule, especially if you cannot be there to unpack the capsule yourself with your future generations.
      • Establish a plan for how and when the time capsule will be retrieved. Set a specific date or milestone, and ensure that the retrieval process is documented. Take plenty of photos as well as videos as you want during the event.

Sample Writing: Food Writer

I recently wrote an article about how to cook like an Italian grandma. To help others see how to write such an article, I have decided to share it on this blog. Feel free to take notes and use this as a foundation for your next venture into article writing.

Cook Like a Nonna: 6 Deceptively Easy Italian Recipes

Have you ever been out to dinner at some fancy Italian restaurant and wondered, “Why is the sauce here so much better than my canned stuff at home?” Or visited a friend’s house with Sicilian heritage, tried their lasagna, then immediately resented the frozen stuff you usually eat? (You know the kind. It has freezer burned noodles, plus mystery meat sauce.)

As complex as Italian food may look to make, it is a class of cooking known for its simple ingredients as well as recipes. True to form, the following Italian dishes are not only easy, but will surly wow guests at your next gathering. Be it family, friends, or a romantic date, you are going to amaze your future dining partners and, even, a true Nonna once you cook up any of these meals.

The Melon Caprese Salad is not only an elegant antipasto, but also a quick way to create a complex marriage of flavors in a short amount of time.

All that is needed is a melon of your choice (honeydew, watermelon, or cantaloupe), prosciutto (Italian ham), fresh arugula, mozzarella cheese, and red onions. Mix together in a vinaigrette of olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper to heighten the rich flavors of the salad.

The sweet tangy flavors of this fresh salad will be a light, yet filling addition to any meal. Perfect for summer time BBQ or quiet evenings at home with a glass of wine.

Want something to pack for a picnic? Maybe spice up dinner with the kids? How about instead of making the traditional cold sub sandwich, try making a toasted Italian sandwich (also called panini).

Toasted sandwiches are popular in Italian culture. It is a lunch item that heightens the regular patty melt with spreads like leftover tomato sauce, pesto, or canned peppers, etc.,.

This recipe doesn’t even require a panini press to make either! You just butter the bread, toast it briefly in a pan, then place your desired fillings (meat, cheese, and pesto) between the bread, and grill it like a grilled cheese sandwich.

Invented by Italian immigrants in the late 1800’s, the tomato based Fisherman’s Stew was a meal of necessity (as much as it was delicious!) Originating in San Francisco, Italian fishermen would take leftover catch of the day and cook it in a giant pot. Large helpings of tomatoes, onion, and garlic were likewise used.

Called “cioppino,” the stew was known for being a communal dish; everybody shared or “chipped” something into the stew for dinner. The same principle of using whatever seafood you have on hand lives on today too. For instance, this recipe used halibut as the meat of choice, but, again, Fisherman’s Stew is versatile.

Combining fish with shellfish (crab or mussels) can really add to the overall taste of your soup. Using bell peppers makes it spicy; in fact, each household has their own way of preferring to cook cioppino. Experimentation is encouraged!

Hankering for a lighter soup? Not to worry! A great choice for any hot summer’s evening is this Italian Orzo Spinach Soup. Free of heavy proteins, it is a soup base that lifts the pallet while satisfying your hunger.

The orzo in the soup also isn’t rice; it is a small pasta. Made from semolina, a golden colored flour, it is a pasta with high gluten content.

What makes this recipe extra special is not just the orzo, but the simplicity of the dish itself. The ingredients (broth, spinach, onions, seasonings, and pasta) are all easy to cook. All that needs to be done is throw the ingredients in a pot, saute, and then simmer.

Eggplant Parmesan is a sensational method of creating a fantastic feast without meat. Your main protein of the meal will be the eggplant. What is eggplant? A vegetable hailing from the same veggie family tree as tomatoes and zucchini.

Usually purple in color, eggplants may be found in shades of white, green, or in multicolored stripes. When cooking with eggplant, consider drawing out the eggplant’s moisture in the oven (as this parm recipe suggests). Do so after slicing and seasoning it. It will make the eggplant taste meatier.

Think of Eggplant Parm as Chicken Parm minus the chicken. It has all the gooey melted cheese and Italian flavor with the added benefit of watching your waistline.

Fettuccine is a long flat pasta adored by Italians. It clings to sauce like a magnet; absorbs spices with gusto. It is additionally the pasta of choice for meat based meals.

For example, a garlic butter sauce mixed with thick heavy cream will adorn the fettuccine in this Garlic Butter Fettuccine recipe. Paired with thickly cut zucchini and charred strips of chicken, you’ll find your toes curling at the decadence of your dinner.

What makes the meal yet more surprising? It takes only a half-hour to make. That’s 30 minutes people!

Now, as they say in Italy, “Buon appetito!” Or, as we say in the states, “Enjoy your meal!”
